Description

Meet Raisa Begam, a lac artist from Ajmer. After her husband and father-in-law, she continued doing this craft that has been practiced in their family for generations. This craft is not only a source of livelihood for them, but also their identity and pride. With her passion for this craft, she continues to mold and create every piece with care and a touch of traditional charm. Learn about the craft of lac, a big part of Rajasthan’s jewelry styles, colorful, delicate, and handcrafted. This craft is as old as the city of Jaipur, and Maharaja Ram Singh of Jaipur was a key contributor in flourishing this craft across Rajasthan. Lac is not only used for lac bangles and other jewelry items, but also in many decorative pieces. Discover one of the sustainable crafts, because lac is a natural substance excreted from the lac insect occurring on host trees in India. It is then mixed with various materials and colors, heated and used to create different items.
